What are some of the best methods of attracting sponsors and getting them to give you money for your event. We've been trying to approach sponsors but have not been having as much luck as we'd like. None of them seem very interested.

What is the best way to approach sponsors and what types of things can we offer them to encourage them to sponsor the tournament?

You r best off to go for a LOT of sponsors who can give u a small amount each. ''Hole Sponsors'' r a good way of doing this. Assuming u have 18 holes in ur tourney, try to get 18 hole sponsors at $200 each. (Or even 36 co-sponsors at $150 each.) Their name/logo will go on a sign positioned at each hole (remember to allow for costs of having the signs made - ur responsibility.)

You will find u have a lot more success if there is a legitimate charitable component to ur tournament. Sponsors do not traditionally get business from sponsoring a golf tournament (unless PGA Tour etc.) & so it is a hard sell to get someone to sponsor ur tourney on the basis that 144 people will be playing. But if say 50% of the proceeds r going to a legit charity, they may offer up some sponsorship on that basis. Even better if u can offer them an official, tax deductible receipt for their contribution.

Finally, if u go after product rather than money, u will have a lot more success. Ask for a driver, or a shirt, or a case of beer (depending on who u r approaching) & u will get good response. Companies always have spare product & getting that product out there is good for business. Departing with cash (especially now) is not so good for business.

say your playing for kids with cancer, or people with aids in africa, or to help global warming, or a local school event

go to your area business and ask for hole sponsers. also if there is a beverage cart working the tournament, your may be able to get a local business to advertize on the cart for more $$$, since it will see every group a few times.

Hit up the potential sponsors early in the year when still have money to commit. Most companies will budget late in the previous year. If you approach them then they can plan on the big bucks sponsorship. If it is on the club level ask the pro for a list of suppliers that you could contact for equipment donations. Again,earlier the better.
