l got a hole in one playing golf. l say skill, mates say luck. what was it ?
l do not have a handicap, l play for fun. we are all quite good ( usually about 11/12 over) but nobody else ever came close to hitting one beFORE !

well if you a good player then it is probably skill but if you can barley hit a ball then its luck. what is your par,is it good?

A hole in one is all luck.

If you can hit the green consistently, then that is skill. But for the ball to end up in the hole is pure luck. l like to say that the hole just happened to be at the same spot where the ball stopped.

Most pros go through their entire careers with only a handful of aces. Considering that they have a lot more skill and play a lot more rounds than most of us, that should tell you that it is luck.

Considering the most skillful players are on Tour...and they do not hit them that often.. l will go with good fortune Hows that?

There is a nice reference on about.com that quotes a Golf Digest article about Hole-in-one odds. It says the following:

Tour player making an ace: 3,000 to 1
Low-handicapper making an ace: 5,000 to 1
Average player making an ace: 12,000 to 1

So, combination of skill and luck (skill to reduce the odds, luck because 5,000 to 1 is still a long shot)

Luck! When opportunity and preparation come together. Like Gary Player said '' The more l practice the luckier l get.'' Congrats. on the Ace. But if it was all skill you could repeat it. It was luck. But good job.

its rare for the best players in the world to get a hole in one even though ultimately it is the goal to get that little ball into the hole in as few shots as possible!

Even for the pros it is lucky to get a whole in one why would people dance around on the tee box if it is skill. If you say its skill you are a liar because that maybe the first and the possibly last you will ever have.

Regardless enjoy the moment and the knowledge that some people go whole life without one!

skill & luck. the ball is on a tee. u have option were to tee ball. a eagle from the fairway, or just off green , harder u r playing the ball as it lies. 2 very good shots par 4 . on a par 5 little more margin for error, but still requires 3 shots. worst thing about hole in one . not having insurance for post round drinks. no insurance , full clubhouse & course. with insurance , 2 people plus 3 partners. still a great shot. very high odds. problem is so much ad reline next hole bogey great score. no offence the quote gary player, orginal sam snead. no offence intended.

Skill put it close enough to go in. Luck helped by it going that little further and in the hole. So, both.
