when it is hit harder?

I am doing a science fair project, and l do not understand how a golf ball would go farther if you hit it faster...rather then when it is hit harder..

Let me take a shot, If l hit a golf ball at 80 mph it will go a certan distance, If l hit it at 120 mph it will go farther. Hitting it with more speed is hitting it harder

l think it should be the same. im just gonna guess that speed goes farther than power

l would say hitting it harder does not guarantee it will go farther, but l can guarantee if you manage to swing faster, the ball should go further, providing you can hit the sweet spot at the same speed.

In two words: Impact Velocity. Hitting a ball faster is hitting it harder.
When you hit a golf ball it compresses at the back and as it leaves the club face that energy is transfered forward(hopefully!). The faster you hit it the more compressed it becomes and the further it goes.
Tiger Woods has terrific club head speed, that, coupled with timing and brilliant talent sets him aside from the rest.Hope this has helped.

Natalie you've asked a question that is confusing to a lot of people & that is what is the difference between swinging hard & swinging fast. A hard swing will produce a great deal of club head speed through the use of acceleration & hit the ball a long way. A fast swing will not produce the proper sequence of events to produce the acceleration & produce a weak shot. Everyone that plays the game has come to realize that it is a death move to try to swing too fast & know that to speed up u have to slow down. Sounds a bit complicated l know but golf is an enigma & full of strange laws. To hit the ball a long way requires fast club head speed not a fast swing speed. Hope u can understand the difference.

Mathematically the energy imparted to a golf ball is 1/2 the mass of the clubhead times the velocity of the clubhead squared. The mass represents how hard you may be hitting and the velocity the speed.

There is technology in Golf equipment.

The angle of the golf head and the grooves on the face of the club combined with the dimples in the golf ball make the ball spin. Then aerodynamics comes into play.
That makes the ball stay up longer and go further.

Ask a friend that does martial arts. The impact is more important than the strength.

Well there is a given that you are leaving out of the equation. That is the (relatively) uniform mass of the clubhead. The manufacturers have optimized the head so that it is already as hard as it currently can be. Since that is static the only way to make one shot go further than another is by increasing the speed with which the head moves through the ball. If you make the head bigger and heavier than you would slow down the lever and decrease distance

Great question.

There r several factors that will change the overall distance. If u swing at a ball at a speed of over 100 mph, & the ball has a backspin rate of 1500-2200 rpm is u would have the optimal swing patern for greatest distance. should the ball be spinning at a rate of 3400 & above, u would experience the Balloon effect where the ball will go flat & then jump almost upright.

now, should u hit a ball at 80 mph, & have 3400 rpm of backspin, u will have close to the optimal flight pattern. the reduced speed of the ball needs more backspin to keep the ball in the air as long as possible, maximizing distance.

l hope this helps.

Cheers,

Jordan

Distance is a product of speed and centeredness. Most golfers have trouble with the latter and find that when they ''slow down'' they hit it better. They sacrifice speed to get closer to the sweet spot which has a more desirable effect on feel and distance. Club makers strive to make sweets spots larger so golfers can swing faster

The physics is very simple. You have a an object with a certain mass M1, moving at a certain velocity V1. The energy E of this moving object is 1/2 x M1 x V1 ^ 2 (half times M1 time V1 squared). When this impacts another object of mass M2 at a state of rest, the energy E is transfered to this object. In an ideal state, u know that all the energy E will be transfered to the second object & hence this object will now move at a velocity V2, which u can work out as V2 = 2 x M2 x E (two times M2 times E). Remember this is an ideal state. In reality u will need to add a decay factor, which will be less than 1 to the second formula to calculate V2. No u have an object of mass M2, travelling at a velocity of V2 launched at an angle of say theta. With this u can work the distance this object will travel. And l will leave it to u find out how to calculate this formula. Come on u have to do some thing for ur science fair project.
All the best.

Speed, power (hard) and resistance affect the velocity of, say, a golf ball. But in golf, resistance is minimal as the ball is usually on a tee or sitting on grass. Therefore the variable of speed has a greater contribution to the velocity than does power. Now, if the ball was buried in deep grass, offering more resistance, then how hard you hit it would be more of a factor (cue Tiger Woods) than it usually is. Good luck with your project!

When you swing a golf club, there is kinetic energy in a swinging club.
The more force you exert, the more you will have a higher porpotion of kinetic energy.

And when you strike the ball with the club, there is a transfer of the kinetic energy from that golf club into that ball that make it move.

The speed of the ball can be influenced by a few different things from the size of the golf ball, the design of the dimples, etc. See resources below.
