Why do you need fitness of any sort for Golf

it for us over 50 guys who wish thy were still think were young

If you are playing non-competitive golf, you do not need fitness. If you are going to compete in the game you need fitness for club head speed, lower body strength and the ability to walk 36 holes in one day when the weather is hot.

Apparently, u r one who has never carried his bag & played 36 holes in a day or caddied for some dude who had put lead weights in his bag. You never did 5 consecutive days of play, two hours of daily practice & then walked the course to make ur living. You never spent at least an hour per day in the fitness tent to loosen up prior to practice. And u never had the physique of Tiger Woods or played the game in 90 degree humid heat. Rest assured if u had u would never have asked the question. Sometimes, Ignorance is bliss.

Go out to the country and try to walk six or seven miles up and down steep hills with a 30 pound weight strapped over your shoulders. Then you will know why.

Try walking 5+ miles with elevation changes over a 4+ hour period while maintaining peak mental concentration and hand-eye co-ordination.

Now do it in heat and humidity.

Now, add on carrying a 20-30 pound bag.

Woods was the first golfer to really focus on being supremely fit. l would say he is on to something.

As to the core training, much of it focuses on your golf muscles (back, legs, shoulders).

Just look at Tiger. He is in amazing shape and he is the best golfer in the world. That tells me that with the same talent level the guy in better shape will still win.just like any other sport.
