l am going to be caddying for my first time this weekend, and it is a amateur championship.l have been golfing for 5 years. Any advice would be helpful.

l caddied for a friend of mine in the UK for a Q match for pro is his words on the first morning were ''Just keep your mouth shut'' that is what l did and we both had a great day.

The big thing is pay attention to the players. Know where everyone is so u can stay out of their way. Stand behind ur player & to the left (for right handed players) when he is hitting so u r out of his field of vision. Wet one end of the towel so u can wipe clubs off as u put them back in the bag. Always have the towel ready when ur player marks his ball on the green. Know when other players r ready to hit or putt so u r not making noise or moving around. In general, think about what would bother u if u r the player, & then avoid doing those things!

Show up keep up & shut up. In all seriousness a good caddy will arrive in time to watch his man practise & get an idea of how he plays, the length he hits his shots etc. Make sure his clubs r clean & he has only 14 clubs in his bag before he tees off & make sure he gets to the first tee on time. Be the first to arrive at the ball & make sure you're not in a competitors way before plunking the bag down for ur man to select a club when he has taken a club make a mental note of the yardage & club selected for future reference & take a few steps back & watch him play his shot making sure u know where it went. The caddy whose man is the first to hit the green is obligated to take the pin. If a player asks to have the pin held make sure it is loose in the hole for easy removal. Remove the pin as soon as he hits the putt so as not to take a penalty. Clean ur players clubs after each shot, his ball before putting & in general let the player initiate any conversation. Relax & watch for other players positions so as not to interfere with their lines of play especially on the putting green but u already know that. Enjoy ur day.

A few basics:

-Give ur man exact yardages. Not ''it is sorta 135ish to the center of the green'' crap. More like ''it is 120 to the front, 132 to the hole, 141 to the back, & it is 115 to clear the water''.
-Give yardage recommendations, NOT club recommendations unless u know ur man is distances cold.
-Unless asked, do not offer advice.
-Watch ur man is ball flight like a hawk, especially if it goes offline.
-Keep those clubs clean, especially his irons (wipe the dirt/mud/sand off).
-Make sure u study that hole location (pin) sheet & know the course yardages.
-Be positive.
