I am 20 years old and l shoot in the mid 80 is I've only got down to 79 once ever. I've never had any lessons or coaches anything I've learned l have figured out through trial and error. l wanna start playing in tournaments in the area but what l really have no idea about is what kind of tournaments get you into a position to making it a career.Any help is appreciated.

why not try out for college golf? That should help you get experience in tournament golf.. good luck and have fun..

Just playing in local tournaments wo not get u onto the PGA tour.
The only possible way to play tournaments to get onto the tour would be this way. l know you've heard of the U.S. Open..well the word open means that the tournament is ''open'' to any person in the US. So, what u would have to do is go to the usga website & a few months before the open they will post when the local tournament times r & if u play in one u go onto the next then next until u reach the U.S. Open as an amateur.
Basically, u will enter a local qualifier, then on to sectionals, then state, the regional. Of course u have to be a great golfer to win all these to make it to the Open. But that is a way.
Also, another way to become a PGA Pro is go to the PGA Tour qualifying school. l believe it is in Orlando or around there.maybe Jacksonville, but anyway it used to be like $3,000 ( l am sure it is more now.maybe $5,000) anyhow u pay the fee & play against everyone that is trying out & u can get on that way.
Also, if u want a career in golf not as a PGA Tour player, but just a golf teacher/instructor or just a career in any type of the golf industry u can check out SDGA.com..(it is San Diego Golf Academy). There r like 6 or so locations one in San Diego, Orlando, Hawaii, Arizona, etc., but u can go there to get a career in golf. It is a college that is about two yrs. & u get a degree in the golf industry. Last l checked cuz l was gonna go there it was about $16,000 for tuition.
But, anyway just playing little local tournaments against average people in ur area wo not get u very far.

To be the best u have to beat the best.

You need to be able to beat everybody at ur golf course playing off scratch, everybody in ur area, state (region) on & on.

Get yourself a member of the golf club u play at so u can have ur handicap (this is separate than the years green fees)

Then play in the competitions at ur golf club, get some wins under u belt using ur handicap. Get that handicap down & down.

Then when ur playing off around 5 or lower, try out for golf college & see how that goes.

Ok, ( l am not being mean or a smartass) u r shooting in the 80's, u r already 20 years old & u want to be on the PGA tour.
First, get a lot of lessons, hope u have a lot of natural talent & be dedicated as much as anyone in the world to practicing. Take a good natural golfer that starts at 14 years old. Say he did kinda good in Jr tournaments, was 3rd in the conference (averaging 72.4) in high school, gets a scholarship to a unc school, & u get an insurance agent. After college l won several amature tournaments & finished in top 5 A LOT. If l had practiced 6 to 8 hours per day got lessons (had very few) l had only maybe a 1 to 2% chance to get there.

REALITY CHECK: This will sound harsh, l am sorry, but u will never be a PGA tour player--or any other tour, for that matter. You r more likely to win the lottery given ur age & current skill.

Read the books ''Q School Confidential'' or ''A Good Walk Spoiled'' by John Feinstein to find out how even really, really, REALLY good golfers struggle to make a living playing professionally.

HOWEVER: You could become a PGA professional & work at a club somewhere. You have to be able to shoot in the mid-70 is consistently, & take a bunch of courses, & pay the PGA of America $6K or so.

But. be prepared for very early mornings, long hours, & low pay. But. free golf!

You will need to go to q school. The entry is 10,000. If you come in the top 125 you make the Nationwide tour. NOt likely though. You will need to be able to shoot in the 60 is anywhere, or you wont be a pro.
