What does it mean when someone is ''reading the green''? Thanks!

It means that your reading the slope, and the grain of the green so you can have an idea how your putt will go, and where to aim so it can get to the hole.

trying to figure out if the ball is going to go left or right when you putt it to the hole and how fast is the green

Hello, this is just an aspect on how we read greens & how we actually determine our intended line when making a putt. Most putts u will see on a putting green r all going to have some sort of break. Rarely will u have a putt that is actually straight to the hole. If u see this hole right here, we r actually going to see it breaks considerably from left to right. Again every putt is different but what we want to determine is how do we know how much that ball is going to actually turn from right to left, left to right. Again a lot of that is going to be experience but one way we can actually help ourselves in lining up our putter & this is what we call lining up the putter to the hole. What l want to teach u now is actually how we line the hole up to our putter. Again this is 2 different ways of looking at it. When u actually line ur putter up, instead of actually determining ur line by putting ur putter on the ground, what l want u to do is actually look at the hole & u r going to actually bring a ball & imagine a ball going into the hole. We r going to bring it out of the cup, we r going to find the middle of the cup, we r going to bring the ball back out & we r going to imagine the line going all the way back to the putter. Once u get back to the putter, u r going to actually make ur corrections based on that particular line right there. Back here in lining up the hole to our putter or intended line as opposed to lining up the putter to our intended line. What that means is we've determined that the middle of the cup now is right in here somewhere & we r going to imaging this line coming back out. Again u can not do this when u r actually playing but again u can imagine a line & that way when u r actually taking ur putter & lining up ur putter, u r going to actually line it up to the imaginary line that you've actually drawn. You r going to get it on that line. Again what u r going to find is 2 things; whether u read the green right or whether ur execution to our putting stroke was right. Again if the putt is not on ur intended line, u r going to know it was execution. If u actually hit it on ur line & it does not go in, u know that u read the green wrong.

Hey sorry man sorry for my long answer. But by reading this u can know how to read greens.Thank you.

Read the Green = how the ball will act on the putting area

Slope down = rolls faster = hit softer
Slope up = stops quicker = hit harder
Slopes right = turns right = aim left
Slopes left = turns left = aim right
animal droppings between your ball and the hole = use your wedge (just kidding)

always practise on the putting green before starting your round. It gives a good idea how fast or slw the ball will roll

Good luck

You start as u approach the green, u r trying to determine the slope between the ball & the hole. You do this to adjust ur aim & speed to putt the ball in or close to the hole. Notice general terrain, it will have an effect. Can u see the greens slope? The high places & the low points. notice the direction blades of grass r growing on he edge of the hole, the ball will''die'' in this direction. Standing to the side it becomes evident if u r putting up hill or down or both in the same putt. Determine what u think will happen & hit the putt. Pay attention & absorb what happened. This is reading a putt or green. Remember it do not mean $hit if u can not putt.
