While playing golf on the weekend my golf partner chipped in from off the green, l went to the flag and lifted the flag to get the ball out and the ball squirted out of the hole without me picking it up. l was told that technically in the rules of golf that the chip in was not counted and we would have to play another shot from where the ball had landed when l pulled the flag out. Is this true?

No. The ball was holed out. There is no penalty.

If the entire ball was below the lip of the cup, it was holed. What u do after the ball is holed is completely irrelevant. Once the ball is in the hole, the play of the hole is done.

The definition of ''holed'' is: 'A ball is ''holed'' when it is at rest within the circumference of the hole & all of it is below the level of the lip of the hole.' (Definitions.)

If the ball was not completely below the lip, u could ''move or remove'' the flagstick. If the ball falls in the hole, it counts as being holed out on the chip.

If it does not fall in the hole, it would be placed on the lip of the hole, & the player will need to putt. There is no penalty in this situation. (See Rule 17-4. Also, see the decisions for rule 17.)

In general, if u move the ball with anything other than a stroke with a club, u need to replace the ball at the spot where it was last at rest. (Rule 18), NOT at the spot where it ends up.

who ever told you that is stupid, possibly unethical, but definitely has never read a rule book. Dumb.

Agree with all - no penalty. Assuming you were in a competition and there is a dispute with no rules officials, you would play out 2 scores - one having holed out the shot, the other following the ruling of your competitors. Then before siging your scorecard you review the actions taken with the tournament officials letting them decide. Just for future reference; whenever there is uncertainty on a ruling.
Good luck.

Are you saying the ball was already in the hole when you removed the flagstick? You should restate the situation before a rule is applied.

No absolutely not. Once the ball comes to rest in the hole that player has completed the hole and the score counts.

No, once the ball is in the hole it is a done deal, as far as staying on the edge, after 10 seconds the ball is ruled dead

The definition of holed in the Rules of Golf is:
A ball is ''holed'' when it is at rest within the circumference of the hole & all of it is below the level of the lip of the hole.

If the ball was below the surface of the putting green then ur ball was considered in the hole.

The person u were playing with may have been refereferringrule 17-4.

17-4. Ball Resting Against Flagstick When a player is ball rests against the flagstick in the hole & the ball is not holed, the player or another person authorized by him may move or remove the flagstick, & if the ball falls into the hole, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke; otherwise, the ball, if moved, must be placed on the lip of the hole, without penalty.

Under this rule the ball is still showing above the lip fo the hole & when u pulled the flag out u knocked it away from the hole. Then u would have to replace on the lip & tap in the putt.

If ur ball was showing the easiest way to solve the issue is to remove the flagstick slowly up & away from the ball. If the ball falls in it is ''holed'' if it does not u would have to putt.

Hope this helps.
