l am 37, 5'10 180 lbs.l have been told to go with a regular length club but l have also been told to go with a regular length minus 1/2 inch for better club control.any ideas?

You should get fitted to be sure. A lot of golfers think they need longer or shorter clubs depending on their height but what really matters is your hand position at address.

As for gaining more control with a shorter club - that is true with some of the drivers these days at 45.5'' - 46''. If you can not hit the sweet spot at 46'' but you can at 44.5 then you will hit it further and more accurate with the shorter club.

Go get measured, it really does not matter how tall you are. Its all in your swing and how far your hands are from the ground at the time of impact.

At 5'10'' u fit nicely into the regular length mold & u should only consider shortening ur clubs if u do not hit the sweet spot on ur irons on a regular basis. When it comes to the driver however u r talking about something completely different. It was not that long ago that the standard length for a driver was 43''. All that changed with the graphite shafts requiring a standard length of 44'' to keep the swing weight up. With the change to the lighter titanium heads lengths soon became 45-46'' as a new standard. Most players would hit the sweet spot more consistently with a driver in the 44-45'' range but when u shorten the club the swing weight becomes lighter so get some lead tape to get the feel back in the head. You can use the tape to create a draw bias by weighting the heel & a fade bias by placing it nearer the toe. For a neutral shape the centre of the back will do & will also give u a slightly higher launch angle. It is fun to experiment so have some fun with it & good luck.

If you a beginner go with a standard length shaft. If you are an experienced golfer go to a qualified cluub fitter and get your clubs fitted for you and your swing.

l would go with regular length. If you are curious, choke down a half inch and see if it helps, if not, then your clubs are fine. Anthony Kim chokes his clubs and prefers it to having shorter clubs. It works for him. Guys, its not the clubs that matter most, it how you swing them. l am no slouch but Tiger could whip me with a $100 set from K-Mart.
