what does ''greens in regulation'' mean

To get on the green in the amount of shots required to have a two putt for par.

For example:

It is a Par 5, so If you need a two putt, take 5-2=3.
3 shots is the Greens in Regulation (GIR)

The chart for green in regulation: Par three - On the green with the first shot; Par Four : On the green with the second shot or first shot . Par 5: On the green with either the second or third shot. These are all considered as greens in regulation.

It means how many greens did you hit.on a par four if you are up on 2, par 5 up on 3 and a par 3 up 1.

To sum up what everyone here is saying, Green In Regulation pretty much means how many birdie putts you had. So, if you get on the green in one on a par 3, you have a birdie putt which means you hit a green in regulation.

Greens in Reg...is just another statistics kept during a round of golf.
Each Hole has two Putts per Regulation. So that means on a Par 3, l need to be on the Green in one in order to have my two putts for PAR.
On a 4 par, l need to be hitting the green with my second shot, giving me two putts for PAR. If l do hit the green on my second shot then l have Hit the Green in Regulation..IT has nothing to do with ur Score. Like the same as keeping track of ur Putts..
It is another way to evaluate ur game to single out weaknesses. If l am hitting almost all Greens in Reg, yet l can not break 100, l need to work on Putting..IF l can not break 100, yet l consistently have under 36 putts per round..Putting is not the problem..

It means getting to the putting surface in the required amount of shots, allowing the player a chance to achieve par or better.

If the hole is a par 3 then u need to hit ur tee shot directly to the green & it needs to stay on the green.

Likewise on a par 4, the maximum no. of shots required to acheive the green in regulation is 2, i.e the tee shot & 1 approach shot.

On a par 5, 3 shots r required including the tee shot & 2 approach shots.

But it this does not necessarily mean that even though u have acheived green in regulation (GIR) that u have to achieve par or better or worse. You can eagle, birdie, par (or bogey with a 3 putt).

It is debatable that GIR takes handicap into consideration. Quite often, u hear someone say about a player hitting his first shot off the tee on a difficult hole, ''he is there for nowt''. Personally l think the handicap should only be considered when the hole is completed.

it is how many greens you hit in regulation in 18 holes. Like say your on a par 3, if you hit it on the first time, you hit a green in regulation. Same with a par 4, if you hit it on your second try that is a green in regulation.

On a par 4, u should be on the green in 2, that,s on the green in regulation !!!
